 GIVING BACK
HANCOCK COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER

Started in 2012, the Hancock County Animal Shelter is a strong organization with support from the county and
Friends of the Shelter, and they’re proud of their record.
“We’re a no-kill shelter and adopt out a lot of animals,” says Manager Shane Wyman, who’s been with the organization since it began. “Community support has been great and we’ve had no problem getting people to help us.”
Various rescue groups pull animals from Hancock County for adoption. The shelter also works with an animal organization in Massachusetts. “Working with these groups, we get animals sent to other states outside the area,” Wyman said.
Donations of supplies come in from other states too, thanks to the wish list on the shelter’s facebook page. These include food, beds, collars, leashes, disinfectants and more.
Adoptions were brisk when the pandemic began and haven’t slowed down. “We had a volunteer who came in for a meet and greet, only allowing a few people in at a time, and we adopted out every dog,” Wyman says. “Lots of cats were adopted too. We take some to Pet Smart in Gulfport every Saturday and they go fast.”
Every animal that leaves the Hancock shelter is spayed or neutered, has all vaccinations, rabies shot and is wormed. The owners get a free veterinarian check up from a list of eight area vets who provide the service.
